October 26, 2012

Pet Docs Present the Old and the New Mini-Veterinary School Ottawa 2012 People are living longer than ever before, and so are our pet companions. Even as science and technology advance health care, we continue to discover the health benefits of traditional and complementary medicine in a holistic approach to animal health care. These are some of the messages of Ottawa’s fourth annual Mini-Veterinary School being offered at Algonquin College beginning October 26th, 2012 and running for 4 Friday evenings. At a cost of $100 for adults (with senior and student discounts available), Mini-Veterinary School 2010 is for everyone according to organizer Dr Michelle Lem. In their 2012 series, you will learn about the expanding field of complementary veterinary medicine, with talks on the use of traditional Chinese herbs as well as acupuncture for treatment in companion animals. What you need to know about parasites and their transmissible diseases in pets (such as ticks and Lyme disease) will be presented, along with how to conduct a physical exam and assess your canine companion. We will also explore the growing need for hospice and palliative veterinary care, and discuss living through pet loss and bereavement. In each lecture, you will also be shown a “best home practice”, such as administering ear and eye medication and bandaging techniques. More details about this year’s lecture series, speaker bios and registration can be found at www.vetoutreach.org. Mini-Veterinary School is a fundraiser for the Mission Veterinary Care program which has brought veterinary care to 1,400 animals of the homeless people in Ottawa since 2003. The program has been operated by volunteer veterinary professionals who are dedicated to the “Community Medicine for People and Pets” mission of Community Veterinary Outreach.
